The hot temperatures have helped create a tinderbox in our forests. There are burn bans all over the state. Many counties and cities have banned fireworks.

Firefighters in Pend Oreille County Fire District 8 are residents, people just like you, but trained to be first on-scene to suppress fires. They volunteer their efforts without receiving monetary compensation.

The recent heatwave and current drought conditions have primed us for a very active fire season. Although we can't control what nature does, we can control what we do.

As you celebrate the 4th this year, please avoid using fireworks. A small spark could turn into a large wildfire. As South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue said, save fireworks until New Year's or next 4th of July, conditions permitting.

No need to pussy foot around. Do not AVOID using fireworks! DO NOT USE FIREWORKS! Period.

The County Commissioners of Pend Oreille County ask all residents of Pend Oreille County to avoid the use of fireworks this year. Even those fireworks deemed “Safe & Sane” can start fires, and they urge you to refrain from using those as well. There are fireworks trailers and tents selling them all over the place in the county, why are you allowing them to still be sold and why not just ban them for the time being?
